Hello Johnny Cyber Fans,

Johnny is still in the UK filming "Sleepy Hollow" with Tim Burton and crew. For those who live in the UK, Monica first told me that Johnny will appear in a special episode of the sitcom "The Vicar of Dibley" to raise money for Comic Relief. Johnny will star with Dawn French in the comedy, broadcast March 12, Comic Relief night on BBC1. The Daily Mirror said Johnny may "snog" French during the show, as a follow-up to the tonsil-tickler with Four Weddings star Hugh Grant for Comic Relief in 1997. Johnny rarely appears on TV programs when not promoting a film so this is a special treat for those fans who will be lucky enough to see this show.

Another interesting TV appearance by Johnny took place last month. A portion of an interview taped in the UK appeared on the U. S. tabloid show Hard Copy. The Hello! and Bunte print interviews which appear on my interview page apparently where taken from this video taped interview which was conducted by an international journalist. So if you've seen the interviews and photos from Hello! and Bunte, you will know what was said during the Hard Copy interview and how Johnny looked for the interview. The host of Hard Copy mentioned at the end of the interview that more of the interview would air on the Fox Kids Channel. I have yet to determine when or if this will happen but I'll inform you via the bbs as soon as I learn anything new.

Marie learned that Johnny will receive a French Award called César on March 6. He will receive this award to honor of his career. The ceremony will be broadcast on Channel +.

As a result of one of the posts on the bbs, I remembered that I had recorded a recitation by Johnny of a Jack Kerouac poem for a TV special called The United States of Poetry. (no longer available on site)

I mentioned in last month's newsletter that the February issue of British magazine Neon had an interview with Christina Ricci in which she mentions something about biting Johnny's leg. Here's the exact text typed by Mette:
The interviewer says: "Fear and Loathing must have been quite an education too". Ricci: "That's already getting to be a blur. Benicio Del Toro got to whip me with this blanket, and in another scene I had with Johnny Depp I had to bite him on the ankle. Johnny was really cool about this and kept saying in rehearsal, "Y'know, Chris, if you really want to bite me, feel free... make it hard... make me scream." And I'm thinking, What if I draw blood, what if Johnny Depp ends up in hospital? But I felt kind of empowered. You know... wow... Johnny Depp is letting me bite his leg. Then I thought, No way, man".

Mette also advised that the UK magazine Empire for March put together a list of "Empire's 100 Most..." Johnny is mentioned twice on the list; first at number 12: "Most unbelievably handsome star: Johnny Depp", and then at number 91: "Most unlikely to marry Vanessa Paradis, whatever he says, given his past record: Johnny Depp"!!

The biography about Johnny by Nigel Goodall is now back on track and scheduled for a UK release in May and July in the U.S. Nigel's book on Winona Ryder has been nominated for a prestigious award in the UK called the Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction. I have a copy of this book which is a very nice biography so I am looking forward to his book on Johnny. I'll keep you all advised of further details.

I also want to report that Johnny was an executive producer on a song which appears on a new CD by his friend, Chuck E. Weiss. The CD is titled Extremely Cool and the song is called "Devil with Blue Suede Shoes". That song was featured in "The Brave." Chuck was one of the original co-owners of the Viper Room with Johnny. The CD has received excellent reviews internationally. If you like the blues, this CD's for you.

Yazid stopped by The Man Ray, the new restaurant/bar in Paris co-owned by Johnny, on Feb 13 and had this to report:

"Yesterday, I decided to go at the Man Ray very near Champs Elysées. Wahoooh, it's really great and beautiful. Like in American movies! There's a big mezzanine for the bar (280 seats) and downstairs the restaurant (300 seats). All in Asian style with Buddha statues from Man Ray universe. I met the press relation guy, Frank who is assistant of Thierry Kléméniuk, the artistic director of the place. The club is packed every night. Next time, I will eat there. They said the food is perfect : tapas, sushis etc." Yazid also said that it's rumored that the name of the restaurant may be changed as a copyright for the name had not been obtained and the owners did not want the name used for other establishments in the world.

There was a nice photo from "The Ninth Gate" in the February French Premiere. I recently read that this movie may be released in the U.S. in September. According to the New Line Cinema site (http://www.nlcpub.com/index.html), Johnny's other completed movie, "The Astronaut's Wife", is scheduled for release on July 9th. This date of course is subject to change.

I found a magazine called Pop Star! in which they have pages dedicated to Hollywood's Hottest Hunks. Johnny was among the gorgeous guys which states that he had the "Best Career Choices". Also, on a page called Links, Reach for the Stars, I found my very own web site listed under Johnny's name. This is the first time I've seen my new URL, johnnydeppfan.com, in print. Small thrills. :-)

• Marie (France) sent us two (1 & 2) great photos from the Cannes Festival last year.

"There was no BMW. A car was delivered to her at The Priory but it was a Mini Cooper and it had been sent by the manufacturers. "Suddenly it turned into a BMW that Johnny gave me," she exclaims. "How did a Mini Cooper suddenly transform into a BMW from Johnny Depp? Where did that come from?" And meanwhile he gets all this press for being incredibly gallant. "Nope!" she laughs. "It's not his style, a BMW." Though she concedes that Depp has been "very supportive of what I've done".

- How many times in your life have you been in love? (Inhales sharply) God, you really get to the nitty-gritty, don't you? Uhm...once.
- So should we guess that's Mr Depp? Yeah. (Laughs)
- That's quite a big thing to say.
Not really. I mean, it's true. That's the way it is. I was in love with him, and I haven't been in love with anyone since.
- Is it something you still feel very strongly about?
Yeah. I mean, it's quite strange. Um... it was quite an intense relationship for four years, and for a while there it seemed kind of like it wasn't real. But it was. So I'm quite comfortable with that.
- Why do you think it didn't work?
A lot of reasons, I think. Both of us.
- Do you think that to any degree you're still in love with him?
(Screams with what seems like a mixture of indignation, amusement, embarrassment and delight) Oh my God! What are you like? I don't want to talk about it (smiles).

In the interview they also talk about a possible movie career for Kate:

- When you were going out with an actor, did that make you less or more able to do it?
"I kind of had to be very quite about it. I never told him that I wanted to do it, not until somebody came and said I want you to do this movie. And then Johnny was quite behind me. I was going to do it and then I just said I didn't feel ready. Before that we never really discussed it. I always got the feeling he wouldn't be very happy. I just didn't want to go there with him. That was his thing."

Reemi posted that she read at the New York Post Web site (tabloid) that Johnny may be interested in a role in Julian Schnabel's film on the life of Cuban novelist Reinaldo Arenas. Arenas killed himself in 1990, but not before writing his jailhouse memoir "Before Night Falls". Arenas was jailed by Castro essentially for being homosexual, making him a martyr to gay activists. This report is unconfirmed at this time.

Johnnynia has started two Johnny Depp chatrooms at AOL People Connection. The first is in the catagory, Town Square and is titled JOHNNY DEPP INN. The second is located in the catagory Arts and Entertainment and is titled, JOHNNY DEPP LOUNGE. AOL users have fun.

I'm sure you all have heard that Johnny was arrested on January 31 in the UK while fending off paparazzi. There wasn't very much attention paid to this arrest in the media, probably because everyone is disgusted by paparazzi since the death of Princess Diana. The most coverage appeared in the UK tabloid papers on February 2 and other tabloid press the following week. I'm going to add some comments to the online newsletter as a link regarding the press accounts in the UK from fans, Rachael and Carolina, that originally appeared on the bbs and an interesting article found by Patty at the Austin Chronicle Web site. Also, I am not putting any of the arrest photos with this letter or any other permanent place on the site. To do that would be extremely disrespectful to Johnny and I certainly don't want to give those paparazzi any credibility. These photogs caused Johnny to be arrested and profited from the event. I hope you understand my position. If you haven't already seen the photos, you may be able to find the photos on other Johnny-related web sites.
